Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors around that, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
